In association with Sun Microsystems Hungary, GKIeNET Ltd. and T-Mobile Hungary Co. conduct quarterly surveys on corporate internet usage and the development of the electronic economy in Hungary. The present report provides an overview of computer use in the corporate sector.

SURVEY FINDINGS

  • 90% of all companies with five or more employees in Hungary have computers.
  • On average, companies with computers (N=783) have 11.9 PCs, of which 10.5 are desktop computers and 1.4 are laptops.
  • One-fifth of the firms use one computer, 28% use two to three, and 23% use four to six computers. A smaller percentage use more than six: 19% of all companies have 6-15 computers while 10% use more than 15.

Total number of corporate computers

Calculations based on the number of businesses reveal that Hungarian companies with five or more employees have a total of 632 thousand computers. The majority of computers are used in the industry, in retail and wholesale, as well as in business services.

Age of computers

In March 2005, one-fifth of all computers (desktops and laptops) used by businesses with five or more workers were less than one year old. The majority of computers (49%) were aged between one and three years, while 32% were three years or older.

The percentage of computers aged three and up is approximately ten points above the average in agriculture and fishing, as well as in the electricity, gas, heating and water supply sector (44% and 41%, respectively. At the same time, the percentage of computers less than one year old is lower than the national average in agriculture and fishing. In the sector of hotels and restaurants, the percentage of computers aged one to three years is significantly higher than the national average (60% each), while the rate of computers older than three years is markedly lower (17% and 21%, respectively).

In the category of medium-sized companies, the rate of computers aged one to three years is below the average, while the percentage of computers older than three years is seven points higher than the national average. In large corporations, the percentage of computers aged one to three years is four percentage points higher than the national average, while the rate of computers aged three years and up is four percentage points lower.

ABOUT THE SURVEY

The survey was conducted in March 2005 over the phone, interviewing a representative sample of 1,000 companies. The survey targeted businesses with five or more employees, covering the entire area of Hungary and all sectors of the economy.
